Dr Pretorius is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon that qualified from the University of Pretoria in October 2017. Dr Pretorius has always shown a keen interest in Surgery and specifically Orthopaedic Surgery.
His first exposure to orthopaedics was when he cut his left hand with broken glass from a window frame as 5-year-old boy. He underwent tendon repair to his left hand and fingers and as result of the surgery managed to completely regain all function of his hand. This has always motivated him to one day be able to do the same type of surgery and to be able help others in the same way.
He was born in and grew up in Johannesburg. Dr Pretorius matriculated at Marais Viljoen High School in Alberton and from there he went to complete his Bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery at The University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
Dr Pretorius then moved to Pretoria to complete his two year internship at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital form 2009 until 2010. There he met his wife Tatum, a professional wound care nurse and they married in 2012.
From 2011 for Community Service Dr Pretorius worked at Far East Rand Hospital in Springs, where he spent two years working as a medical officer in general surgery until the end of 2012.
In 2013 Dr Pretorius returned to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria to work in the Department of Orthopaedics. He completed the five year academic training program and examinations to become a College of Medicine certified orthopaedic surgeon at the end of 2017. He worked as a junior consultant orthopaedic surgeon in orthopaedic trauma for a further 6 months in Pretoria at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
Dr Pretorius moved back to Johannesburg and started his own full time practice at Life Flora Hospital on the 1st of July 2018. At the end of 2022 Dr Pretorius moved his consulting rooms to Life Wilgeheuwel hospital to focus on specialising further in upper limb and hand surgery. From September 2023 he opened rooms at the newly constructed Johannesburg Surgical Hospital.
He lives in Roodepoort with his wife, Tatum, and three kids.
His main area of interest is surgery of the Hand and Wrist.
